    • 2nd son of Leiutenant General Julius George Medley (1829-1884) (Royal Engineers), by Adelaide (1841-1923), daughter of Colonel James Steele, C.B. Baptised at a church in the parish of Paddington 10 May 1861. Educated at Wellington College 1875-80; matric at Oxford (Keble College) October 1880; 1st Class Modern History and BA 1883; MA 1887; Hon. LL.D Glasgow University 1931. Cremated at Oxford.

      At Wellington was Head of School and Queen's Medallist. History lecturer and tutor of Keble College, Oxford, 1884-99. Professor of History at Glasgow 1899-1931. Sometime Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Glasgow University, a Member of Glasgow School Board, an examiner for the Scottish Education Department, for the Oxford and Cambridge University Examination Board, and for the Civil Service Commissioners. Sometime Honours History Examiner for Oxford, Cambridge, Belfast, Birminggham and Sheffield Universities, now (1932) for Glasgow, Sheffield, and Durham. Member representing Glasgow University in Glasgow Territorial Army and Air Force Association 1908-31. Chairman of the Military Education Committee (Officers' Training Corps) 1909-31. Chairman of Central Organisation Military Education Committee (Senior Divisional O.T.C.) 1923- 31. In the Great War one of the Young Men's Christian Association's lecturers to the Army in France, and (1918-19) sub Director at TTrouville, later at Havre, under the Army Scheme of Education: awarded British War medal. Author of A Student's Manual of English Constitutional History published 1894 (6th edition 1925) and other works (see Who's Who 1930). He and his wife liveed at Oxford 1890-1900: at Glasgow 1900-31 (45 Lilybank Gardens from 1919). Vacation houses: The Manor House, Mears Ashby, Northants 1908-15; and successively 1915-28 at Bradfield, Greenham, and Highclere, all in Berks, and, from 1928-34, at Hill House, Heckfield, Hants, to which he retired on resigning his Professorship. Thereafter, lived at Ashby, Tydesham, Newbury, until his death.
