51 2nd son of Leiutenant General Julius George Medley (1829-1884) (Royal Engineers), by Adelaide (1841-1923), daughter of Colonel James Steele, C.B. Baptised at a church in the parish of Paddington 10 May 1861. Educated at Wellington College 1875-80; matric at Oxford (Keble College) October 1880; 1st Class Modern History and BA 1883; MA 1887; Hon. LL.D Glasgow University 1931. Cremated at Oxford.

At Wellington was Head of School and Queen's Medallist. History lecturer and tutor of Keble College, Oxford, 1884-99. Professor of History at Glasgow 1899-1931. Sometime Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Glasgow University, a Member of Glasgow School Board, an examiner for the Scottish Education Department, for the Oxford and Cambridge University Examination Board, and for the Civil Service Commissioners. Sometime Honours History Examiner for Oxford, Cambridge, Belfast, Birminggham and Sheffield Universities, now (1932) for Glasgow, Sheffield, and Durham. Member representing Glasgow University in Glasgow Territorial Army and Air Force Association 1908-31. Chairman of the Military Education Committee (Officers' Training Corps) 1909-31. Chairman of Central Organisation Military Education Committee (Senior Divisional O.T.C.) 1923- 31. In the Great War one of the Young Men's Christian Association's lecturers to the Army in France, and (1918-19) sub Director at TTrouville, later at Havre, under the Army Scheme of Education: awarded British War medal. Author of A Student's Manual of English Constitutional History published 1894 (6th edition 1925) and other works (see Who's Who 1930). He and his wife liveed at Oxford 1890-1900: at Glasgow 1900-31 (45 Lilybank Gardens from 1919). Vacation houses: The Manor House, Mears Ashby, Northants 1908-15; and successively 1915-28 at Bradfield, Greenham, and Highclere, all in Berks, and, from 1928-34, at Hill House, Heckfield, Hants, to which he retired on resigning his Professorship. Thereafter, lived at Ashby, Tydesham, Newbury, until his death.

52 2nd son of Rev. John Lomax Gibbs. Baptised 13 June 1865 in the church at Clifton Hampden. Educated at Winchester College and at a Tutor's in Cornwall 1979-83, and at the Royal Indian Engineering College, Cooper's Hill, Englefield Green, 1883-6. Buried at Leamington Spa.

In the Indian Telegraph Service (in Burmah 1886-7 in India 1888-1914); a director thereof 1910-14. Retired to England 1914. Sometime Captain in Madras Volunteer Guards. In the Great War was in London attached to the Intelligence Staff of War Office 1915-19 as a Censor of Telegraphs with the rank of temp. Lieut. May 1915, temp. Capt. Ap. 1919. Assistant Treasurer and lay Canon of Southwark Cathedral 1925-30. Lived from 1925 at 7 Prince of Wales Terrace, Kensington.

In Africa May 1969- December 1969, sent by the Order of the Holy Paraclete to visit their Sisters, Schools, Houses, Hospitals and work in general, in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Rhodesia, Swaziland, Kalhari, Ghana, Mampong Ashanti, Cape Coast and Accra. Curate of the Ascension, Hull, Diocese York, 1970-72. Retired officially January 1972; helping voluntarily since with services, visiting etc. at St. Michael's, Abingdon, Oxon., in villages (Diocese Hereford) and latterly in West Malvern (Diocese Worcester) also involved in working with all age groups for the Church, Missions and Charities, through sponsored walks, sponsored swims, etc. Over a period of 20 years has sponsored children through "Save the Children Fund" and "Bible Lands Mission" in Britain, Korea, West Indies, Africa, Palestine.

1950-59 Teaching at Diocesan College, Cape Town; Cape Town University, St. Paul's School, London, Cyrene African Secondary School, Rhodesia. 1960-63 First Principal of Ranche House College, Salisbury, Rhodesia. The Hall at Ranche House College is named after him. 1964-73. Teaching in England: King Edward's School, Birmingham, Woodbridge School, Suffolk; Ipswich High School, G.P.D.S.T. 1974-80 First Warden of International Community Centre, Nottingham. Trustee of Budiriro Trust (Scholarships for Rhodesian Africans).

Interests: Painting, printing, writing poetry, gardening.

Married at Great Malvern, co. Worcester, 7 December 18544; married secondly 7 June 1866, at St. Michael's Paddington, her cousin Robert Henry Lee-Warner (died 5 March 1895) of Tiberton Court, co. Hereford (see Lee-Warner of Walsingham in Burke's 'Landed Gentry'). She died childless 15 March 1895 at 43 Lansdowne Crescent, Cheltenham. Gibbs, Mary Beatrice (I1464)
 
60 3rd son of Canon Reginald Gibbs, MA. Baptised at Clifton Hampden 19 November 1905. Educated at Lancing College (Foundation Scholar) 1919-24 and at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, 1924-26. Army Staff College, Camberley, 1939.

Captain of the School at Lancing and in the school Athletic Team in 1923 and 1924. At Sandhurst in the 1st Association football team; a junior under officer there; passed out 6th. Gazetted to The Queen's Royal Regiment February 1926 and joined 2nd Battalion in Allahabad, India, in March the same year, returning to UK via Sudan with his Regiment in 1928. Adjutant, Regimental Depot 1930. In 1934-35 at London University and in Italy studying Italian under War Office auspices, prior to becoming an Italian military Interpreter. A/Staff Captain 9 Inf. Bde., Portsmouth, 1936. Promoted Captain 1937 and appointed Adjutant 2nd Bn. Queen's Royal Regt. in Isle of Wight. Nominated to vacancy at Staff College, Camberley, January 1939.
Following outbreak of war in Sept. 1939 was appointed, in November, Staff Captain (A) G.H.Q. BEF France. In February 1940 Brigade Major 144 Inf. Bde. in 48 Divn. and in May, on the German invasion of Holland and Belgium, moved up with the Bde. t to outskirts of Waterloo. Took part in the Retreat to Dunkirk and evacuated from Dunkirk beaches on 1st June 1940. (Mentioned in Despatches). 1940-41 on Staff at H.Q. 10 Corps, Catterick, and at H.Q. Eastern Comd. Luton Hoo. March 1942 appointed to command 1/6 Queen's Royal Regiment, serving in Egypt in 8th Army and taking part in battles of Bir el Munassib, Adam Haifa and El Alamein. Whilst serving in Egypt was mentioned in Despatches and awarded the DSO.
Captured in the Desert in October 1942 and taken by air to Italy. Held in various POW camps 1942-43, from Bari to near Cremona in the valley of the river Po, from whence he escaped from Campo PG49 at Fontanellato in Sept. 1943. Trekked 600 miles down the Apennines before reaching Allied Lines near Naples in November 1943. Details of the escape are recorded in a book, privately published, Apennine Journey, Diary of Travels across Italy after escaping from P.O.W. Camp.

November 1943-Feb. 1944 sick leave in U.K. June 10 1944 ordered to Normandy Beach Head to take over command of 2nd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, whose C.O. had been killed in the Normandy landings 3 days earlier. Remained in command throughout operations in France, Belgium and Holland up to the Rhine in Germany. Awarded Bar to D.S.O. for action whilst under command of II Armd. Divn. near Falaise.

March 1945 appointed GSO I Liaison 24 Army Gp. and subsequently returned to U.K. to command 166 Inf. Officer Cadet Unit in Isle of Man. Oct. 1945 in command Basic O.C.T.U. Aldershot to reform it into the Mons Officer Cadet School; appointed Acting Colonel. 1946 in command 1st Bn. of his own Regiment, The Queen's Royal Regt. in Malaya. 1948 Commandant Eaton Hall Officer Cadet School, Chester. 1950 retired, remaining on Regular Army Reserve of Officers, with mobilization appointment in rank of full Colonel.

1950-63 market gardening at Roborough House, Nr. Plymouth; Member of Board of Governors, St. Dunstan's Abbey School, Plymouth 1951-66; Member of House of Laity, Church Assembly 1965-70; Church Warden, St. Mary the Virgin, Bickleigh, 1951-63, member of the P.C.C. and Manager of the Church School at Bickleigh; member of the P.C.C. of Parish Church of St. Eustachius, Tavistock, since 1965.

Interests: Gardening; Bird Watching (Member R.S.P.B.).

Clubs: Sometime member Junior United Service and Senior Army & Navy (the Rag); more recently, St. John House Club (Order of St. John of Jerusalem).

Ordained Deacon at Exeter, 1892, Priest 1893. Curate of Ottery St. Mary, Devon, 1892-4; Curate of Clyst St. George under his father 1894-7. Vicar of Clifton Hampden, Oxon., 1898-1923 (presented by Henry Lord Aldenham). His (overlarge) parsonage of 1832-46 (meanwhile called The Cottage) being re-exchanged with it. Vicar of Aldenham 1923-40 (presented by Alban, Lord Aldenham). Canon of St. Albans.

He was in Antony Gibbs & Sons, London, 1892-1907. In his own business at 62 London Wall from 1907. Amongst other companies, director of Minerals Separation Ld. from 1906 (chairman from 1919); an original director and chairman of Rhodesian Congo Border Concession Ld., 1923-30, and of N'Changa Copper Mines Ld. 1926-30; director and deputy chairman of Rhokana Corporation from 1930; director of Eagle Oil Transport Co. 1913-30; director sometime of the Argentine N. Eastern Railway Co. Ld., and a Trustee for its debenture holders. Churchwarden of the parish church of Roehampton, 1911-23. Last residences: Woodmansterne, Putney Heath, and Groman, Erwood, co. Brecon.

69 5th son, born at 11 Bedford Square, Bloomsbury, London 11 February, and baptised 2 June 1827 at St. George's, Hart Street, Holborn. Educated at Charterhouse, London, 1836-46, matric, at Oxford (Exeter College) 22 May 1845; drowned there in the Isis on 3 June 1846 and was buried 9 June 1846 at Clifton Hampden. Memorial Inscription in church and churchyard there.

His diary 1846, is in possession of J.A. Gibbs. A bust (posthumous) by Jos. Dinham in in possession of Lord Aldenham.

70 6th son, born at 11 Bedford Square, London, aforesaid 28 June and baptised 13 August 1829 at St. Giles-in-the-Fields, aforesaid. Educated at Charterhouse, London 1839-43 and at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Matric at Oxford (Exeter College) 11 May 1848. Died at his residence 14 Norfolk Square, Paddington, 18 March, and was buried at Clifton Hampden. Memorial Inscription there. Will proved 24 April 1890.

Ensign in 2nd Regiment of foot (Queen's Royals) 23 November 1849 by purchase for £450; Lieut. 1851 (purchase). Captain 1856 (purchase); Major 1870; sold out and retired 1877 with the rank of Lieut-Col. in the Army. Had foreign service in Cape Colony (where he went in ship Calcutta) arriving January 1854) and at Aden 1867 to beginning of 1869. He left the long lease of 14 Norfolk Square, Paddington, where he lived for many years, to his brother John, whose daughters Blanche Gibbs and Ethel Dickson inherited it.

Matric at Oxford (Exeter College) 31 January 1849. Died unmarried at Belmont, Wraxall 27 August 1860 and buried 1 September 1860 at Clifton Hampden. Memorial Inscription there. Will proved January 1857.

His schools before Eton & tutor after were the same as his brother John. During 1857-60 he owned the yacht Gondola in which he cruised (for his health) chiefly in the Mediterranean.

73 8th son of George Henry Gibbs of London. Baptised 26 May 1832 at St.-Giles-in-the-Fields, Holborn. Educated at Eton College 1834-35 and Charterhouse, London, 1846-7. Matric at Oxford (Exeter College), 24 Oct. 1849, BA, a 'grand compounder, MA, 1856. Buried 15 January 1914 at Speen. Will proved 17 February 1914.

To add to the facts about education, he went to a school at Brighton about six or seven, and then to one at Clifton, Bristol. After Charterhouse he was, 1848-9, with a tutor, the rector of Poundstock, Cornwall. Joined Antony Gibbs & Sons, London, 1854, but left them 1856 through ill-health, and in every year 1851 to 58 he travelled much abroad, particularly in Spain, and (1857-8) up the Nile and in Palestine. A student at Wells Theological College 1858. Ordained Deacon (Exeter) 1859, Priest 1860. Curate at St. Mary's, Torwood, Torquay, to Rev. J. Hogg 1859-1860, when his health drove him abroad again (Pyrenees) with his wife and first-born. Living at Bradeham, Bucks., 1863-4. Perpetual Curate of Clifton Hampden, Oxon., 1864 ( (presented by his brother Henry Hucks Gibbs), but resigned work in 1874 from the same cause as before. His parsonage there was what is now the Manor House. Resided at Oaklands, Cleveland, Somerset, 1874-8. Vicar of Exwick, Devon, 1878-85; Rector of Clyst St. George, Devon 1885-97 (presented to both by Antony Gibbs). Retired and resided at Speen House, Berks., 1898-1914. Editor of 'The Registers of Clyst St. George', published 1899 by The Parish Register Society. Member of the Athenauem Club, London, 1863-86. His diaries 1851-1912 (52 vols.), last in possession of John Arthur Gibbs in 1932 are now missing. The volume of his 'Reminiscences' (MS.) from c.1840 to 1910, now in the possession of Denis D. Gibbs.

74 9st son. Born at the farm on the estate of Belmont aforesaid, 9 August and baptised 20 September 1834 at Wraxall. Educated at Charterhouse, London 1844-52; matric at Oxford (Exeter College) 2 June 1852. Died unmarried at St. Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex 6 January and was buried 13 January 1857 at Clifton Hampden. Memorial Inscription there. Will proved January 1857.

Left Oxford 1854 through bad health and went to Spain and Madeira with his brother John and in 1855 to Pau with his sister Mary. His diaries 1853-6 (2 volumes) are in possession of J.A. Gibbs. See also n14. A water colour drawing of him by Paul is in possession of F.L. Gibbs.
